CSIR CALLS FOR STRONGER PARTNERSHIPS AND COOPERATION IN R&D WITH HUNGARIAN GOVERNMENT
The Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Prof. Paul P. Bosu has called on the Government of Hungary through its Embassy in Accra, to help build stronger partnerships in research and development with the Council.
Prof. Paul Bosu made the call when the Hungarian Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tamás Endre Fehér, accompanied by the Trade Attache and Export Advisor to Ghana, Dr. Adams I. Pulay paid a courtesy call on the Director- General, at the CSIR Head Office on Tuesday 26th May 2025.
The visit was at the instance of the Embassy to discuss and strengthen bilateral cooperation between CSIR and the Hungarian Embassy in Ghana, and to present the Embassy’s current agricultural activities and training opportunities available to Research Scientists in Ghana.
Agricultural activities
Hungary, with a population of ten million, is able to grow and feed the entire population and export the excess to support other countries, including Ghana, to achieve food security.
The ambassador outlined activities being undertaken in Ghana by the Hungarian government and reiterated his government’s bid to assist Ghana in achieving food security. The Hungarian Government exports day-old chicks and eggs to Ghana yearly and plans are underway to support Ghana with supply of improved seeds for farmers.
A Water Retention Technology that has the potential to retain rain water in the soil for subsequent use by crops in the field has been developed by a Hungarian company, and is yet to be deployed in Ghana after testing it locally, he added.
Education and Training
H.E Tamás Endre Fehér revealed that the Hungarian Government offers scholarships at all levels (BSc, MPhil & PhD) with an annual quota of 100 students per year for Ghana. He advised CSIR to contact the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat to appeal for slots for its Research Scientists. The Council can also take advantage of the exchange programmes offered by the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture to train its Scientists, he stated.
Areas of Collaboration
Touching on possible areas of collaboration for CSIR, Prof Bosu, stated that the CSIR-Animal Research Institute can support the annual exportation of day-old chicks and eggs to Ghana project with the production of feed for the poultry projects in Ghana. Furthermore, the CSIR-Water Research Institute could do an independent testing of the Water Retention Technology in question or possibly be an off-taker partner for the technology, he added.
