The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR ) with support from the Canadian government through the Modernising Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) programme held a capacity building workshop for the media under the ‘ CSIR  knowledge series’  programme at its Head Office in Accra.

The overall objective of the ‘CSIR  knowledge series ‘ programme is to build the capacity of the media to become better advocates of science and research as part of efforts to rebrand the Council and enhance its visibility. One of the outputs of the training is to constitute and nurture press corps to champion the dissemination of CSIR’s strength in science, technology and agricultural research.

Addressing journalists at the workshop, Professor Paul Bosu, the Deputy Director-General said a lot of work had been done by the Council and it is high time a strong team of journalists who have passion for science, agriculture and research reporting made CSIR the hub for science, technology and innovation.

“This is the main reason we are boosting the capacity of the media in science and research reporting to propagate the works of the Council”, he said.

In her presentation, Ms. Benedicta Nkrumah-Boateng, the Head of Corporate Affairs at CSIR  indicated that quite a number of people do not know much about CSIR’s contribution to national development over the past 60 years, hence the need for a ‘dedicated CSIR press corps to tell the CSIR story’.

‘In the short term we are looking forward to 3 key things: to project CSIR’s strength in science, technology, and agricultural research and impact on national development, to build the capacity of media in science and research reporting, and position CSIR as the reference point for STI content on the media landscape’ she added.

Mr. Donald Gwira, the MAG Communications Consultant at CSIR - MAG secretariat also said the formation of the press corps would help journalists understand the CSIR lexicon and further improve their reportage.

He said, for instance in reporting on the Institutes journalists should ensure that they always prefix the institute with ‘CSIR’ i.e.  “CSIR-Soil Research Institute (CSIR-SRI), CSIR-Food Research Institute (CSIR-Food Research Institute (CSIR-Food Research Institute) and Oil Palm Research Institute” etc .

Ing. Michael Wilson of CSIR- İnstitute for scientific and technological information (CSIR-INSTI) unveiled a digital agricultural innovation hub which currently hosts four apps (3 web apps and 1 mobile app) to support extension delivery services. These are the CSIR Technologies portal, CSIR Space, Kuafo Market Place and Agritech Mobile Advisor. İt is a one stop shop as the platform provides data on farmers, products, markets, prices and geographical location of farm produce and verified agro input supplies.

The workshop was the maiden edition of the capacity building workshops for the media under the ‘CSIR knowledge series’ programme’. Participants were drawn from over 10 media houses.

Modernizing Agriculture in Ghana is a five-year Canadian government support programme initiative to provide financial support and technical assistance in response to the objectives of food and agricultural sector development policies and value chain management issues for increased farmer incomes and enhanced rural livelihoods.

The programme focuses on demand-driven research and different methods of extension delivery that facilitate the dissemination of technologies to farm households, farmer-based organisations and out-growers of nucleus farms.
