We will create wealth through research to make CSIR a self-sustaining research centre” – New Deputy Director-General, CSIR

The newly-appointed Deputy Director-General (DD-G) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Professor Marian Dorcas Quain has reiterated her outfit’s commitment to create wealth through research to make the council a self- sustaining research center.

Prof. Quain made this statement when she and Dr. William Sarfo were sworn into office as the new DD-G and Director of Finance respectively.

The brief ceremony brought together high-profile personalities, families, friends and well-wishers of the newly inducted officials at the forecourt of the CSIR Head office on Wednesday February 22, 2023.

Prof. Quain, a Chief Research Scientist and Associate Professor of the CSIR College of Science and Technology (CCST), until her appointment was head of the Biotechnology Research Team at the CSIR-Crops Research Institute, Kumasi while Dr. Sarfo a chartered accountant and Fellow of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (FCCA, UK), was the Deputy Director of Finance of the Ghana Communication Technology University.   

Prof. Quain will oversee the development and execution of research and development activities of all the 13 research institutes of the council; mobilise funds for research and development activities; establish effective linkages with relevant institutions and agencies within and outside the CSIR; oversee the transfer of the results of research in science and technology and coordinate the commercialisation activities of corporate CSIR.

Meanwhile, Dr. William Sarfo will oversee the financial matters of all the 13 institutes, undertake preparation of budget, formulate and update financial reports for management, supervise and train all accounting staff of CSIR.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman for the CSIR Council, Prof. Robert Kingsford Adaboh in a brief address expressed hope that CSIR will be steered in the right direction with the help of the new officials.

“I have no doubt that this pair will do a wonderful job” he stated.

This he said was so because of the rigorous selection process and that the Council had selected capable people for the respective roles.

Prof. Paul Bosu, Director-General of CSIR congratulated both Prof. Quain and Dr. Sarfo on their respective appointments.

He was of the view that the appointment of the newly sworn in DD-G and Director of Finance was timely as the council was in the process of commercialising some of its technologies.

Prof. Bosu, hinted plans of launching a new corporate strategic plan which required considerable inputs from the DD-G and Director of Finance.

Representatives of the CSIR Research Staff Association, (RSA), Senior Staff Association (SSA), Ladies’ Club and the CSIR-Administrators Association of Ghana (CAAG) all took turns to give short speeches and to pledge their loyalty and full support in service to the new Deputy Director-General and Director of Finance.
