Celebrating Women in Science: Prof. Quain Honoured

Prof. Marian Dorcas Quain, a Chief Research Scientist and the Deputy Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has been honoured at the 8th Ghana Women of Excellence Awards for her outstanding contribution to the social and economic development of Ghana in the area of scientific research.  The award was presented to her, along with a citation in recognition of her expertise in plant biotechnology.

Prof. Quain's main focus of research interest is plant biotechnology, with expertise in plant physiology, tissue culture, molecular biology, genetic engineering, cryopreservation, and biosafety. She is currently focusing on the mass production of vegetatively propagated crops using tissue culture-generated clean planting material, Semi-Autotrophic Hydroponics (SAH), and aeroponics.

Since 2016, she has been an Associate Professor in charge of the Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Programme at the CCST CSIR-CRI Graduate School. The African Agricultural Technology Foundation |(AATF) celebrated her as a Biotechnology hero in 2022.

In addition to her research, Prof. Quain is also conducting outreach programmes to provide education on genetic engineering and the use of basic molecular biology tools in day-to-day activities and plant biology.

The Ghana Women of Excellence Awards Scheme forms part of the celebration in Ghana of International Women’s Day, and is organised by Top Brass Ghana under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection – based on the theme ‘Empowering the Ghanaian Woman for National Development’.

The objective is to celebrate the achievements of Ghanaian women, to motivate them to strive for excellence, and to set up the illustrious award-winners as role models for the younger generation.

Overall, a total of 19 industrious women across various sectors such as education, fashion, broadcasting, healthcare, civil engineering and many more were awarded during this year’s ceremony

Congratulations to Prof. Quain on this honourable achievement.
